Master Beekeeper Visits Wildcat Hive

By Jensyn Siebrecht

Northwestern School entertained guest speaker, Phil Breed, a master beekeeper, this past week. Breed informed students about bees before heading out to the hives that the science students have been keeping with Mrs. Denise Clemens.

From Dordt University, Breed explained the basics of bees, how their bodies are made up, what senses they have, etc. After talking to a few classes, he went out with a group of students to the bee hives located in Northville to show them the basics of bee keeping and how to do it and to analyze the data.

While in the classroom though, he played a little trial about the basics of the bee, saying to keep the kids active and not just sitting there, trying to listen.

When heading out there, all the bees had unfortunately been dead from the cold outside, but this was just a learning experience. Clemens said she would start again with the help from the students. They will have to rebuild the hives to bring the bees in; it’ll be a lot of hard work, but Clemens is committed to restarting everything with the help from students.
