Congratulations to former Northwestern administrator, teacher, and coach Kathy Graves for being selected to the South Dakota High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame!
The induction ceremony will take place June 20 in Rapid City during the annual SDHSCA coaches convention.
With a career record of 338-134 (.716), Graves started the volleyball program at Northwestern in 1985 and coached until the winter of 2002, leading her teams to three state titles (1999, 2000, 2001), four runner-up finishes (1993, 1994, 1997, 1998), a fifth-place finish (1996), and a third-place finish (1992).
Growing up in Watertown and graduating from Watertown High School, Graves received her B.S. in Elementary Education and Special Education from Northern State University in 1975. While at NSU, Graves played on the women’s basketball team (1970-1974), the volleyball team (1972-1974) and the softball team (1974).
After college, Graves spent 32 years at Northwestern teaching nearly every subject and coaching nearly every sport. Graves retired from coaching in 2001 and spent her remaining years as K-8 Principal, Special Education Director and District Testing Coordinator before retiring in 2007.
